Sunshine On Cyprus - A Journey In January...

What a lovely wee treat - winter warmth in January. They say a change is as good as rest but it's great if you can do both! Visiting Cyprus - and having a holiday at this time of year - were both a first for me.  Here are a few reflections and thoughts for anyone thinking of heading off for some out of season sunshine on the "island of love"...

If you're going to Cyprus at this time of year be prepared for an island in a state of mid-winter slumber. You may also get a day or two of monsoon rain, thunder and lightening - very exciting! On the other hand, when the sun does shine it's as lovely as a sunny summer's day back in Scotland - and there's every excuse to jump in for an outdoor swim...just like the locals!

As one who doesn't like to venture too far from the coast, I was glad to base the holiday by the seaside, near the harbour in Paphos and close to the beautiful birthplace of Aphrodite (see above).

While the modern town is a typical resort - and very quiet out of season - it's also a good starting point for excursions, coastal strolls and you can visit the remains of the ancient city (above) on the edge of the harbour.

At the end of the day, the perfect place to unwind and watch the sunset is Alea, a cafe bar serving up cool cocktails and inspirational wisdom - painted grafitti style on their ceiling....
